Amanda's post about the existential void (9/10/2015)

WHAT IS ORIGINALITY? WHAT IS THE VALUE OF A THOUGHT?

Here we have a self-portrait of Amanda as represented by a gif of Beaker from the Muppets
Well, it has been said in many fields that originality is an illusion. I remember taking a literature analysis course and being told there are only seven (more or less) types of stories. An entire successful website, TvTropes, has sprung up to acknowledge the various references and shared commonalities between films, literature and other mediums. (I also recommend checking out TvTropes for fun sometime.)
So I guess the main issue I am battling now is the fact that, if nothing is original and everything is borrowed, what makes one thing stand out over the other? We have long learned that "originality" is what makes things stand out to the audience; yet, we learned today nothing is truly original. (Unless you grew up in the vacuum of space without any social interaction.)
