Gabby-Last week with Scott

Getting to talk and meet Scott Schultheis was extremely helpful for me as an artist because he was able to explain his journey from undergrad at UR to graduate school to working professionally. Scott was able to come visit me in my studio and gave me great advice about my art and about being in senior seminar. He was able to explain the difficulties he faced and they were similar to the ones I am facing right now. One of the most meaningful points I was able to get from Scott was the idea of having to make bad work and just to experiment. In my studio visit he encouraged me to just keep making even if it was not good. The point of having to make bad work to get to good work is always such a hard concept for me to grasp since I want it to be perfect the first time.
Just being able to hear about Scott’s journey was helpful for me as it was not a straight line and he is still working towards teaching, which is something I want to do eventually. There is all of this pressure to go to grad school right after college and it was nice to see the Scott took a slightly different route and that I do not need to go the year after I graduate from UR.
I also immensely enjoyed Scott’s show; there is something about his style and subject matter of work that I find appealing.
That is it for now. Going to go spend a lot of money on paper now…
