I've finished up two pieces that I've been working on/stressing over for awhile now. One (Grant's Eyes) turned out really well, and the other (a portrait of my friend Brian) not so much. I started the latter more as an experiment than anything else, and applied what I learned while making it towards the former piece. So, no hard feelings... now if only I'd let it go sooner...
In the process of making both those pieces, I found strong conceptual underpinnings to both, especially as I began to talk about them with other people. That was good because I was worried I was too concerned about the process behind the pieces. But now that they're done, I don't see how I could expand upon those ideas and turn them into something larger.
That's why I've decided to take a break from that and turn to a project that I've had sitting in the back of my mind for about a year now. It's a project that focuses on a the connectedness between and symbolism of recent political movements. It has a strong concept and, as I picture it, a strong æsthetic.
I brought up the idea during my critique and my peers were very excited about it. They gave me lots of ideas about where else to go with the project and brought up connections they saw between it and my current work. That gave me the hope that maybe it's something I can continue working on for the rest of the year. I'm excited to (finally) get started, but I know that it's going to take me a while to do and will be hard to pull off right.
