Rebecca Rafferty and updates

The comment that really struck a cord in me during Rebecca's talk was advocating ourselves. In school and at home we are made to believe that hard work is automatically compensated accordingly. (Maybe not automatically but eventually). One believes that, like in the cartoons, and movies, if you work hard, people will notice you and give you a raise, or a bigger opportunity, etc.

Like she experienced herself, this is not the case a lot of times. And I believe there are reasons to believe this trend is perhaps more accentuated in the art world where everything is "subjective." The unrewarded but hard working artists seem to make up a whole profession of their own.

So it really comes down to being your own best advocate (as well as critic). Nobody outside of mom and dad will hand down things to you if you don't ask for them. That of course, doesn't happen before you do the hard work. Working hard is a precondition to self-advocacy, I think.

As far as my work is concerned, I'm starting to wrap around my ideas for the end of the semester and really leave the thinking behind to turn it over to the doing at 100%.
