Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden is the result of more than three decades of restoration and development to convert the first home for retired sailors in the United States to a regional arts center. It is a place where history, architecture, visual arts, theater, dance, music and environmental science come together to provide a dynamic experience for all ages. One of the largest, ongoing adaptive reuse projects in America Snug Harbor consists of 26 historic buildings, nine distinctive botanical gardens, a two-acre urban farm, and 10 acres of wetlands on a unique 83-acre, park-like campus.
U.S. Regional Deadline: November 20, 2015 – SHARP offers emerging artists a supportive environment to explore their creative development for two months. Artists are provided a studio space on the ground floor of a two-story, nineteenth-century cottage, which has bedrooms on the second level. This unique opportunity is situated within 83 parkland acres of the Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden in the borough of Staten Island.
Artists receive studio visits from guest artists and curators as part of a mentorship program. Participants are also encourages to show recent work in the Center’s galleries or on the grounds. The Residency includes the Edward and Sally Van Lier Fellowship that is funded by New York Community Trust, which provides support for talented, culturally diverse, economically disadvantaged young people who are seriously dedicated to a career in 5the arts. The Fellowship helps artists in all disciplines at the post-BFA college level to make the transition from formal training to professional careers.
