About Rochester Contemporary:
It was really nice to get off campus to visit a major art institution in Rochester. Despite the conversation about how common it is to get rejection, hearing about artist proposals somehow motivates me. Bleu Cease's advice of "submit 100 proposals" is definitely a motivator as that decreases the emotional attachment to each one. Also, as someone who also works in a gallery, I can say rejection is not always a sign of artist failure. It can just be that the gallery/ space is not compatible/ not right for the artwork.
Update about senior trip: Location has been finalized to Hudson Vallery/ MassMOCA! Excited!
About 100 Works of Art That Will Define Our Age by Kelly Grovier
How does one look forward and say what will affect the future? Grovier describes her selection as based on "their ability to resonate as metaphors of our time" as well as their ability to tell the path of art has reached and what new paths may open in the future (12). Now, the pieces and artists here are mostly the big names of the art world. Marina Abramovic's The Artist is Present takes the first place (Though, it doesn't seem Grovier's list is ranked), while Ai Weiwei, Chuck Close, Damien Hirst, and Cindy Sherman are among the names listed.
Grovier lists several exciting contemporary shifts in the art world, including the growth of publicity of women artists, the growth of scale of pieces, and a change in mediums. The change in scale and medium perhaps challenge the idea that art is still limited to the dealer/gallery/boho dance described in The Painted Word. Prada Marfa by Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset, for example, seem to show a movement of artists away from the traditional gallery to find their own spaces.
My fave pieces, however, will always be pieces to contain an exploration of universal themes. Do Ho Suh's Home Within a Home and Ai Weiwei's Sunflower Seeds will always be favorites of mine as they explore issues of home and identity in such brilliant ways.
