Oh, I totally agree. Networking is such an odd concept. I was surprised when Scott mentioned he was a shy child and an introvert. (Of course, introversion doesn't necessarily equate to socially awkward.)
I always found networking such a difficult experience. The image of presenting yourself as a perfect person, engaging in small talk, or what not is something that is ingrained in many students' minds, and it is something that intimidates me. (I'm normally a very skittish person anyway, so this makes sense.) I think this fear of people is a factor that keeps me from really reaching out to people, and sometimes I wonder if I have missed opportunities due to social anxiety.
