Yang: It’s Hard to be Easy on Yourself

Some people say the meaning of the life is to chase and figure out the meaning of the life. Very romantic, but endless, stressful, and exhausting. People tend to put a big stress on themselves, hoping to achieve something better. They work hard to build social connection, they try to paint every details on the canvases, they stay in the office until 2 o’clock in the morning, and so on. Everything should have a meaning for them, and they live their live life a never ending torture.

However, in Scott’s lecture, he declaimed some very interesting opinions about the happiness and stresses. I specially love his answer to the question that what is more important, a happy life of the art inspiration. He said that both of them are necessary for a good artist, since if someone is suffering all the time, he or she will be paralyzed and then senses no inspiration. He makes me understand how the beauty of the art is from the life’s sudden and out of blue.

He also made some great points on how people should go direct on their project instead of planning to much. Cynically, it is so true that most of the times the result will be different from what we originally expect when we are going to do something BIG, because we are not omnipotent and able to take every details into the consideration. Furthermore, our passion towards making something gorgeous will be gradually destroyed by the endless planning. Cliché, indeed we cannot be perfect. SO, just go easy, and start working.

Art should be enjoyable, provoking, and intriguing. If you feel you are bored, dried out, and lame, you are not doing art. However, lots of times people push themselves into the prison of self-restriction with the excuse of “being great.” Maybe we should just release of potential and see how far we can get when we feel easy.
