Next Semester

Well, the semester's finally (well, I still have to write a paper, but it'll happen) over. I completed my final project after many setbacks and some much-needed help. And it turned out exactly as I imagined, like, could not be happier.

Now that the piece is finished, however, I'm already thinking about where to go next semester. This piece feels so complete to me and I am hesitant to alter it without having some sort of intention. I believe that the most fertile ground for me to explore right now is that of semiotics. Looking back on a lot of my work, I have viewed many diverse subjects as symbols. Really, it's that semiotics offers me a lens with which to look at the topics that interest me.

With 2014 there were several issues I was considering through the symbols that represented them. Like I said, though, I don't know how to continue with them without muddling either the message or the æsthetic simplicity of the piece. I have a few other ideas for pieces that I want to make, but I don't think they have the conceptual grounding that this one had.

I think over break I will look for new ideas and symbols that interest me and consider how I can turn them into art. I'll definitely take a look at current social movements to see what might be well-suited to a semiotic approach... hmm, already having some thoughts.
