During the trip to Mass Moca, I was on Heather’s car with Lauren. We had some very cynical conversations towards the digital humanity. Especially me, since I feel that most the digital humanity program is just about walls and projections, and the medium itself is not fully merged with expression of the project.
This phenomenon makes me to think about the relationships between mediums and expression. Back into the Renaissance time period, the medium was chosen highly based on the visual expression and content. For example, mural or canvas painting is highly depended on where the painting would be, or if the painting is religious of not. Another example, watercolor and oil painting are different painting mediums, and based on the different qualities between those pigments, artists developed totally different painting styles. While the oil paintings emphasis the opaqueness of the pigments, the watercolor paintings show decency of transparency. However, nowadays when people talk about digital humanity, the tight bond between expression and medium seems to be disappeared. Lots of times, I will wonder if a project is nessasary to be done digitally, since the power of those projects seem not to be enhanced by the digital parts.
To me, the digital art is something that can be only completed digitally. I used to have a proposal of a Computer art piece: we may code a program that may chat with people like Siri. However, instead of functioning as a virtual assistance, this program can only make conversation about the meaning of the love.
